You’re not going to be young forever, unfortunately. While you’re still young, or not, your skin and face will thank you for starting these habits today. You see, washing your hands and your face strips the skin of its natural oils leaving it exposed to all of the microscopic dirt flying around, the sun’s UV rays, and many other contaminates. In order to preserve the young, refreshed, and lively face of yours there are some basic components that need to be met to ensure you’re taking care of your skin so that it takes care of you for years to come.

Start with a clean slate

Washing your face and hands regularly is an important aspect of hygiene in general but this isn’t the only regimen required for healthy looking skin. Instead, it’s barely the start. You should be washing your hands often to keep yourself and others from getting sick but don’t forget to add lotion to the mix. Most public restrooms don’t have lotion readily available for you to use and I’m not going to advocate that you carry around a little jar of your favorite lotion. But, something you can do is keep a small bottle in your car so that on your way back from somewhere you can add a dab of lotion (not too much, especially if you’re driving… Too much lotion residue on your hand will transfer to your steering wheel building up over time). Be sure to rub the lotion in so that it is absorbed. Your hands should start to feel dry before you stop rubbing them together.

Hands

  • Wash Regularly
  • Moisturize shortly thereafter.

Washing your hands the right way

With warm running water, lather a dollop of soap on your hands, between your fingers, and under nails as possible for 30 seconds.

Rinse with warm running water.

Shake off two to three times before using a single use disposable paper towel.

*Some may have a personal preference to having a more gritty handshake than others. If that is the case, I still suggest moisturizing to help prevent cracks and painful dryness later. If you really are working with your hands a lot, you will build up those callouses naturally. No need to also starve your hands of moisture.

Face

Your face can be really sensitive but is also very important to maintaining a young spriteful appearance. Every morning and/or evening after washing your face you should be using a moisturizer specifically formulated for the face. This will help minimize the appearance and onset of wrinkles in your skin while also keeping the skin taught and fresh. At least once a week, be sure to give yourself a mini facial.

Your Eyes

Your eyes make contact at a distance and may be the center of focus during a conversation… not to mention they’re the window into your soul. Some men have chronic bags under our eyes while others don’t but you should still have an under eye cream that is designed specifically for men.

Weekly mini facial

This is where many men go wrong; they don’t have a weekly facial ritual.

Your skin is constantly producing new skin and those dead skin cells will sit and gather on your face sometimes facilitating bacteria colonies which can irritate the skin causing red blotchiness all over (though this isn’t the only cause of red blotches). We don’t touch our face often and we generally don’t use our faces to open doors but that doesn’t mean there isn’t bacteria and other dirt collecting there. Washing your face at least once a day can be helpful but to reap the maximum benefits of a clean and moisturized face you need to give it a good scrub at least once a month.

  • Start with a mild soap.
    • Wash off all of the surface level dirt, just like you do every night (right?)
  • Use a mild facial scrub
    • I personally use St. Ives but there are many products on the market.
  • Work it in with a brush
    • The small beads in the facial scrub help dig up big deposits of dirt while the tiny bristles help smooth out blemishes and gets into smaller places.

  • Rinse
  • Put on a mask.
    • There are several different types of masks you can use. Some like this papaya mask will eat away at the dirt deep within your pores. Others like this drying mask forms a tight bond with the surface level dirt and pulls the rest of it out of your pores when you take it out.
    • Many people report feeling light and breathing better after peeling the mask off.

  • Moisturize.
    • You just gave your face a wonderful treatment and deep clean. To finish it all off and seal in the benefits you’ll need to put on a moisturizer. Very very lightly. Start with a pea sized dab on your fingers, rub your fingers together to spread out the lotion, and then apply it to your face. This way you’re spreading it over the surface more than jamming a bunch of new stuff into a freshly opened pore.

Moisturizers

There you have it. These three tips taken all together are going to help you keep your skin smooth and your face kind with less aging no matter what time you begin this regimen. Once you’ve mastered this and made it a part of your regular routine you’ll be able to add additional levels to it like toner, lip scrub, eyebrow maintenance, and other rituals that suit you and your skin.
