How to Look Good Without Going to the “max”
How Men Can Level Up Without Losing Themselves

At some point in the last few years, “looksmaxxing” went from obscure internet slang to mainstream self-improvement advice. But it’s gone completely off the rails.
On the surface, it sounds harmless; improve your grooming, get in shape, upgrade your wardrobe, take better photos and present yourself well. But somewhere along the way, parts of the movement drifted into extremes — rigid facial metrics, obsession over jaw angles, and even bizarre trends like “bone smashing,” where people literally strike their faces in hopes of reshaping bone structure.
Let’s be clear: that’s not self-improvement. That’s self-punishment dressed up as optimization.
There’s a smarter way to approach looking your best and here, we give you a few suggestions on how to make that happen. We are very much against the dangerous trend but in love with the idea of making ourselves look as good as possible, owning our looks, and being proud of who we are.
First, Why This Conversation Matters
There has been a misconception about men circulating sociocultural forums for a while now that claim men don’t care what they look like, nor should they. That is absolutely false. Some “guys” really could care less what they look, smell, or dress like. However, there have always been men looking for ways to ensure they present well, are trusted, taken seriously, and for some, lusted after. Now, this latter version has taken on a renewed interest but sadly some are going about this in dangerous ways. Before we get to the suggestions, let’s just take a moment to reiterate why this looksmaxxing trend is not only dangerous on the surface but creates detrimental physical, mental, and emotional pitfalls we should all be avoiding…especially if we actually want to be our best.
If your pursuit of looking better makes you anxious, obsessive, or ashamed of features you can’t change, you’re not leveling up, you’re narrowing your world.
The Dangerous Side of Looksmaxxing
Let’s address the extremes directly.
1. Bone Smashing
There is zero credible evidence that repeatedly hitting your face changes bone structure in any safe, predictable way. What it can do is cause bruising, nerve damage, inflammation, and long-term harm. Your skull isn’t clay. It’s not meant to be “reshaped” through blunt force. Global Center for Health Security
2. Hyper-Fixation on Facial Metrics
Some corners of the internet break down attractiveness into millimeter measurements, eye spacing, jaw width, cheekbone projection. While facial symmetry can influence perception, obsessing over ratios you cannot meaningfully change creates unnecessary dissatisfaction. Read about Facial Dysmorphia on Etre Vous
You are not a geometry problem to solve.
3. Extreme Caloric Restriction or Overtraining
Chasing a hyper-lean physique year-round often leads to hormonal disruption, poor sleep, irritability, and burnout. Ironically, those things make you look worse over time — skin dulls, posture slumps, mood flattens, even your hair can start to fall out. This of course is with a significant calorie deficit. What Actually Works (And Always Has)
If you want to upgrade your appearance in a way that compounds over time, focus on fundamentals.
1. Body Composition, Not Starvation
According to healthline.com you’ll start to see your abs around 14% body fat. But everyone has a slightly different body with slightly different needs. You may have enough muscle and just need to cut to look your best. You may just need a recomp strategy that lets you lose fat while gaining muscle. No matter what it is you need in order to get that chiseled physique so many are going for, you’ll need to do some research. Strength training three to four times per week, prioritizing protein, and keeping body fat in a moderate range will change how clothes fit and how your face looks naturally.
Another great idea is to cut out some alcohol. Instead of drinking your calories away, you can opt for water or a low calorie option (vodka still has calories…). If you absolutely must have a beer try a non-alcoholic one that will keep that can (or glass) in you hand but will also cost you less on the scale later.

2. Grooming That Frames Your Features
A well-chosen haircut, facial hair that complements your jawline, and basic skincare (cleanser, moisturizer, SPF) go further than most drastic interventions. We recently wrote about some of the best haircuts for men and even give you a simple beginner guide to skin care encourage you to check it out.
3. Posture and Movement
Most men underestimate how much posture influences perceived attractiveness. Standing upright, shoulders relaxed, chin neutral — this alone can change how your jawline and presence register in a room.
4. Style That Fits Your Frame
Clothing that fits properly immediately elevates appearance. Focus on structure in jackets, clean sneakers or boots, and simple color palettes.
5. Sleep
Eight hours of sleep will do more for your face than most hacks. Reduced eye bags. Better skin tone. Stronger hormonal balance. Sharper cognition.
The Mindset Shift
The smartest way to approach looking better is this:
Enhance what you have.
Don’t punish what you don’t.
There’s a difference between refinement and rejection.
When you view grooming and fitness as forms of self-respect the energy changes. You move differently. You show up differently. You’re not trying to convince anyone you’re worthy. You already believe you are.
This mentality shift works with your personal life as well which is why we recommend getting We Begin with our Thoughts as a way to begin a metacognitive (thinking about thinking) process that allows us to think clearer and recognize the power in our thoughts.

Final Thought
The modern man is allowed to care about how he looks. That’s not shallow. It’s awareness.
But there’s a line between disciplined self-improvement and insecurity disguised as science.
You don’t need to smash your bones, starve yourself, or chase algorithm-approved facial angles.
Lift. Groom. Dress well. Sleep. Hydrate. Stand tall.
Do the fundamentals well enough, long enough and you won’t just look better, you’ll feel better. And that’s the part no trend can replicate.
